[Subject: Aadhaar becoming an inescapable reality]
It is with great anguish that I am noting how Aadhaar is being pushed down the throat of the citizens of this country, without regard to the opinions expressed by the civil society or the Parliament or the Supreme Court. A search for “Aadhaar” on the internet will reveal how we are quickly headed towards a situation where it will be difficult for a general citizen of this country to lead a normal life, should he not enrol himself into Aadhaar.
As a citizen of this country, I believe the Parliament and the Supreme Court are the custodians of my rights. It is appalling that the govt. is being allowed to use its executive powers to push through such a massive policy initiative. What is the recourse, should it be deemed later that this scheme be recalled?
Letting Aadhaar roll, without waiting for the conclusion of legislative or legal debate, has been like putting the cart before the horse. The govt. is maximising this opportunity, by accelerating the pace of enrolment and deployment of Aadhaar, so that the “enormous cost” of rolling back this scheme becomes a dominant factor to consider. Is that not a travesty of justice?
Without doubt, the presumptions on which Aadhaar was proposed cannot stand the test of an informed debate. Even the arguments that the govt. is currently presenting do not seem tenable. I had prepared some counter points and I have compiled them in the attached paper. Request your kind consideration.
My humble opinion is that we should forthwith revert to the situation when Aadhaar was not in the picture, and subject the proposal to the due process of debate that is applicable to every other govt. policy. I am addressing this letter to all member of the Constitution Bench hearing this matter, hoping for relief.
